Trans makes noise in reverse when "cold"

'79 Plymouth Volare with 3.7 Slant Six engine and A904 Torqueflite. Dec. 2010 a repair shop installed what they called a "re-manufactured" transmission they bought from a local independent tranny shop. It upshifts and downshifts fine and is not slipping in any gear, but if the car has been sitting overnight or at least 4-5 hours, it makes a howling/grating kind of noise if I shift into reverse. After about 15 minutes driving in town, I can stop and shift into reverse and there's no noise. The fluid level was checked in neutral, engine running and at operating temp. It was full. I was told that it needs the low/reverse band adjusted and if that doesn't eliminate the noise, I probably have damaged parts. Does that sound about right?

Will this make the noise without moving? Not certain but doubt bands are adjustable on this. Are you sure it's trans and not something else?
Hard to say with noises and might need to be heard in person by a tech if you have to leave it overnight,

Probably wouldn't hurt to make that adjustment and see what happens.

Actually, there are two adjustments. Kickdown and low/reverse band. The low/reverse requires removing the pan. I need to buy/beg/borrow an inch/lb torque wrench. This will be a good time to check for metal flakes in the pan.
While I was installing a new starter, I discovered 2 loose bell housing bolts. That isn't the cause of the noise. I tightened them and it still does it. Just a heads up for everyone that it doesn't hurt to check the work of a shop when you get your ride home. I guess that's why they only charge $66 an hour labor. I found a better place to go to for major work I can't handle at home.

These cars - Volare/Aspen were around like litter back when and haven't even seen one running around in ions. The wagon was very popular. Never had one come by with a trans noise or issue.
Go ahead and adjust that band and see what it changes. From ancient memory of some that you could adjust bands it just made them faster to shift if way off. The kick-down shouldn't be able to make a noise IMO. If it kicks down gears as you expect don't touch that.
Keep note of loose bell housing bolts! Hmmm. Probably not the cause but of interest. Kinda makes me wonder what else wasn't right?
In that this goes away when warm is confusing me so far?
