Stuck Clutch in Leyland DAF Convoy Van 1996 Sign In

Hi

I have an LDV( Leyland Daf ) Convoy Van, 1996, 80,000 Miles, that has been parked up for a while.

When I started it the clutch was stuck in first gear.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I might free it without stripping it down.

Kind regards.

Re: Stuck Clutch Sign In

You can try starting the van while in second gear but with the clutch depressed and that may free it up but if the disc is rusted to the input shaft, it may have to come apart and even then you will have the pry the transmission out.

Hi

Thanks for that comment. Unfortunately: I can only start the vehicle, with the clutch depressed, and it remains stuck in first; I cannot change gears at all

Kind Regards,

Re: Stuck Clutch Sign In

Well, if you are able to start the vehicle in gear while holding the clutch in, then the clutch isn't stuck at all and your problem is in the shifter or transmission.

If you can shift it easily with the engine off but not with the engine running, then the clutch may be dragging some and it will still have to be removed.

Hi

Thanks for that comment. I did not describe the problem exactly; my fault!

I cannot move the vehicle out of first gear; even when at rest. I can start the vehicle with the clutch depressed; but it will not move out of first gear.

Kind Regards,

Re: Stuck Clutch Sign In

I'm still not totally clear on your symptoms but if you simply can't move the shifter out of first gear regardless of whether the engine in running, then the problem is in the transmission or shifter. Most of the time this happens when the transmission doesn't come all the way out of one gear before going into another, effectively putting it in 2 gears at once. If you have external shift linkage, you can usually crawl under and manually pull the linkage back to neutral by hand, one at a time. If the shift linkage is internal to the transmission, the the top shifter cover will have to be remove and the shift forks pulled back to neutral.
Beyond this, it could just be an internal trans problem.

Re: Stuck Clutch Sign In

Hi

Thanks for that advice; I will try to get under the vehicle with a can of WD40 and a crow-bar and see
if I can move something; before doing anything else.

Kind Regards,

Re: Stuck Clutch Sign In

You won't need WD40. It's not a rust issue. It's usually due to wear in the shifter linkage that doesn't fully retract one lever before pushing the other one. You just need to manually pull the first lever back to neutral so the other will free up.
