Rims for a Ford Explorer

I have a cousin who is thinking of putting 19" rims on her Ford Explorer. However, she's been told it will ruin her transmission by her ex. She wants to know if this is true or if he's just messing w/her.

Yes and no. The change in rim size won't wreck the transmission. The tire size you put on that can though. What needs to be looked at is the outer diameter of the tire. It needs to be the same as the factory tire. If it is bigger, you can overheat the transmission because it is geared for the factory size. Also, your speedometer will read low, which invites speeding tickets since you think you're doing the limit when you're actually over it. Some shops can recalibrate this to allow for a different tire size, but your gear ratio still is the same and isn't good for the trans. By all means put the rims on if you like, but talk with your tire salesman to get a tire matching the factory tire's outer diameter
