I have detached your post and started a new question for you. You shouldn't add to a year old thread.........HT This is exactly the same symptom I'm having, but unfortunately no one weighed in on the original post. I dug deep into the archived threads to find my answer rather than post a quick question, so hopefully you guys will take pity on me. My commuter is a 2000 Daewoo Lanos with 88k, MT. It spontaneously started leaking fluid right at the junction of the driver's side axle and the transaxle. Drove to work, fine, started home, and major noise. The axle has a good quarter inch of vertical play at the transaxle, and of course when I do manipulate it the leak becomes a torrent. Is this an axle replacement, a tranny replacement, or maybe some replaceable part? Any input would be greatly appreciated, guys.

To be honest, I know nothing about Daewoos as we won't work on them. With that said, the CV shaft must be removed to replace that seal. On FWD Chrysler products, it is usually the final drive in the transmission that causes this seal to leak. With the amount of 'play' that you describe, it wouldn't surprise me if that is what you find. You may want to have a trans. shop take a look before you go to the trouble and expense of replacing the seal? If it turns out to be just the seal, and not the trans, I'd replace the CV shaft while you have it out. Might as well take a peek at the brakes at the same time. Loren SW Washington

Thanks very much for the reply, Loren. I expected to have the pull the axle to get a better look at what's going on, just haven't had the time yet for the exploratory surgery. I'm afraid low gear oil probably caused some damage before I could get the car home. There wasn't more than 8oz of gear oil left in the unit when I got home. Just to clarify, do you think it's possible a ruptured seal alone could account for the play in the axle? I'd already resigned myself to needing to pick up a used transaxle, so anything short of that would be good news.

No, just the opposite. The play could have damaged the seal, though. If this is a manual trans, you may get lucky. Loren SW Washington
