Hi! I have a 1996 toyota corolla, with a 5-speed transmission. It has 175,000 miles. A couple
of days ago, I was stopped at a light and the car started shaking,
lurched, the gear shift jumped to the neutral position, locked so I couldn't move it at all, then the car
stalled out. I couldn't move the gear shift until I shut off. Then I
could put it into 1st, start the car, and it ran normally.This has
happened several times, actually more than several, almost every time I
stop at a light. Though sometimes, it doesn't shake but if i let up on
the brake, the car moves forward. It's obviously in gear. A few times,
I'd slow to a light and go to down shift from 3rd to 2nd and the gear
shift locked up. It would be in neutral position, but I couldn't budge
it to shift into any gear.Now I've been told this car has a wet clutch,
but I'm not sure what that is. Is it something that could be leaking
causing this, or is the pressure plate, i.e. the clutch, bad and I need a
clutch kit? Somebody told me that it could be a vacuum leak, but I
can't figure any way that could have anything to do with it. Could it be anything else? Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you're losing your clutch pedal pressure and resistance, then you likely have a problem in the hydraulic system of either the slave cylinder or the clutch master. See if it is low on fluid and if so, find the leak.
