Possible Tractor Transmission or Flywheel Problem?? Sign In

Hi! I have a Mitsubishi MT 300 3cyl diesel tractor and I have a problem. While mowing my yard with the finishing mower last weekend, the tractor came to a sudden stop and died. Awhile later, I tried it again and it ran for about 20 feet and did the same thing. Now when I start it, it will idle fine as long as I am pressing the clutch in, however when I start to let off of the clutch, the tractor bogs down/stalls out and dies without moving. The range and speed gears all seem to move in and out just fineā€¦I checked all of these because I first thought it was my transmission locking up. Do you have any suggestions as to what it may be?

I can't say I've worked on to many of those......... Just going off basic thinking.... It does sound like a tranny problem if it runs fine until you let the clutch out. It could be an internal problem or maybe stuck in one gear. How many speed tranny is it & does it have a reverse gear? Does it die if you leave it in neutral & let the clutch out? If it has rev, can you back up without it dying?

It has 3 forward gears and 1 reverse as well as a speed gear of neautral low medium and high. I have tried forward and reverse and all speeds with no luck. I also placed the speed gear in neutral and moved the range shifter to neutral and it will still die when I let off the clutch wheras like any other vehicle or tractor it should idle. That was the strangest part to me....why does it bog down and die when the gears are in neutral... Any ideas?

If it dies when you let the clutch out when it's in neutral, it sounds like the trans is stuck in a gear. I would probably be looking at the linkage on the trans to see if any of the levers are stuck in one particular gear or not, is something looks "damaged", broken or hanging loose. Think back to when it died, did you hit something (branch, hole, fence, spouse)? Where you changing gears, hard turn, that kinda stuff?

It's possible it was just time for something to go, but if it's dying when you let the clutch out, it's definately in the trans area.............

I don't remember hitting anything, especially my spouse! LOL!! Although if I did hit her with a tractor, I think it would just tick her off!! But I did go through some semi-rough terrain right before this happened. Last night I hooked my pickup to the tractor and had my wife to pull me around the yard while I shifted gears with the engine off in hopes that if it was locked, it would free up. It shifted smoothly into all gears, but when I started it and tried again, I got the same problem...even in neutral, when I let off the clutch the engine stalls out and dies. I'm just a "shade-tree" mechanic...at least thats what my wife says...I can do some minor repair work, but I've never worked on a tranny before. Do you have any suggestions or pointers for me?
