Possible Overfill of Tranny Fluid - Ford Escape 2004 Sign In

Hello:

I have a 2004 Ford Escape, FWD, 6 cylinder 3L engine. I decided to take the vehicle to the auto shop to have the transmission fluid changed. They completed the job. I drove home about 5 miles and pulled into my driveway and decided to check the fluid level. I checked it with the car turned off and the fluid level was way above the knurled line. About twice the distance of the whole knurled section ABOVE the knurled section.

My question is: If I tested this fluid with the fluid a little warmer (drive the car more then 5 miles before test) and the motor idling, would one expect the level to reduce to within the required specification. I would assume if the fluid got warmer it would measure even higher on the dip stick, but I don't know what idling would do to the fluid measurement.

My next question is: Should I take it back and ask them to remove some fluid or will the transmission operate OK with this level of tranny fluid.

Thank you for your help.

Check it with the engine running, vehicle on a level surface, and the transmission in park.

OK, so I ran the car again. Only about 3 miles of driving before the measurement. I put the transmission through all the gears and then put it in park. With the car at idle. the measurement now was considerably less but still over the full line, a little. My manual says that the knurled mark is equal to about 1 quart of fluid. I would say it is about 1/2 that amount too full or about 1/2 a quart. The capacity is 9.4 quarts so I am thinking that 1/2 quart over the full line may not be that bad but thought I would ask you guys.

Is it OK being a little over the full line?

!/2 quart isn't going to hurt anything. You will also get a higher reading when the engine and trans are hot too.
