My 92 rs camaro wont come out of first. Sign In

Well i was driving my car and the transmission started to jerk and make a clunking noise so i decided to just change the transmission before it decided to leave me stranded. So me and my dad put another 700r transmission in the camaro when we were done i adjusted the detent cable and took it for a drive it would wined up to 5500 rpms or so before it shifted hard i adjusted the detent cable again and took it for another drive and it wouldnt shift at all. So after messin with it for another month me and my dad bought a new transmission and i bought a detent cable off a chevy dealership for the car and we put them in.I took it for a drive and it still wouldnt shift so now im at a loss. Any help or advice would be very apprettiated.

I would suspect that there is something wrong with the way the TV cable was installed I would try disconnecting it completely and see if it will shift then. There may be something different about your throttle body making the cable the wrong length.

So disconnect it and Manually try and shift it?

There's nothing to manually do. Just disconnect the throttle cable and drive the car to see if it shifts at a low speed as it should. If not, then the cable is not the problem.

Youve kinda stumped me with that im not sure i understand. if i dont shift manually hows it gonna shift? its to my understanding that in that year and make of car the tv/detent cable fully controlled the shifting. so without out it how would it shift unless i manually went through the gears? or am i wrong bout that?

No, with the throttle cable disconnected, the trans will think it's at idle all the time and shift real early.

Ive actually unhooked it from the throttle bracket b4 did it in the first month and she still wouldnt shift so thats why i changed the transmission a second time its had 3 transmissions in it and none would shift so im assumeing its not the transmissions since i drove 2 of them down there and pulled them out of the cars my self. the third was out of one of my grandfathers cars which is the one in there at the moment which is also a good one. ive changed the govern gear also thinkin maybe that was it and still nothing im really at a loss im gonna rerun this detent cable and hope maybe i just ran it up to the bracket the wrong way and maybe it messed its slack up or somthin. if u can think of anything else let me know im willin to try anything.

The detent cable can't do that unless it's actually putting it into 1st gear instead of drive.
As far as I know, there is nothing electronic in that trans except OD.

I'm not a trans specialist so I'll leave it here to see if someone else has any ideas.

Just Auto Trans Shifting Fundamentals: Trans will shift based on sensing RPMs, load on engine via usually intake manifold vacuum, selector position, throttle position via cable or electric sensing TPS, and when it's actually in drive the "governor" (likely some spring loaded device that when RPMs spin weights to throw them to a point it would force an up-shift) will disallow too many RPMs based upon being in OD, D, 3,2 and if it thinks 1 (first) is selected it would stay in 1.

As suggested by Hammer - taking off the cable from the throttle body if equipped that way ( I dunno each car's ways) would up-shift faster and not down shift well or on time. That's just age old basic control of an automatic. Not a trans head but know enough to get in troubleCrazy

Okay, well i worked on my car again today i started by disconnecting it from the throttle bracket and tried to drive it that way. The rpms went up to 7 grand and wouldnt shift so i went ahead and reran that cable from the transmission up to the bracket and gave it a tad of slack took it for another spin and still 7 grand and no shift at this point i was pissed as hell so i snagged a longer cable off a 97 chevy van slapped it on the car and took it for a spin it shifted but it whined up and shifted hard so i stopped and adjusted the cable well i took off again and it wouldnt shift. went ahead and checked the fluids its only got bout a quart of fluid in it so im am gonna wait till friday and just change the filter and screen on it and hope she will shift if she does ill post.

Basics again: If allowed to do 7,000 PRM you are risking total loss of engine now! This dang trans for either linkage wrong or selector wrong allows or locks into lowest gear.

Anything suggested here is just that as we aren't there and you didn't hire us to fix this. I now suggest you spring for a transmission shop to make diagnosis and final adjustments or change cables if needed. You came close to blowing the engine at 7k RPM - get some help that can see what's going on. Your call,

T
