My 1993 lincoln mark 8 coupe is not shifting gears

I just brought a car (1993 lincoln mark 8 coupe) and I been driving for a week and a half, and it was driving real good. So, 2 days ago, I wanted to test the cruise control. When I put the cruise control on, while I was driving, the car started to drive really slow and it sounded weild. So, I turn it off, but it still wanted to drive slow, it didn't want to drive over 50 mph, because it look like it didn't want to shift gears. But the only way I can drive over 50 mph, is to take it off of drive and put it on 2. But I don't want to do that, because I think it will put a strain on my transmission. So, I have it parked, until I take it to a shop. But, I wanted to know if anyone knows what is the problem. Because I hope it is not the transmission, and I hope I don't have to buy a new transmission.

lilash; When you try to accelerate above 50mph in Drive, what happens? Does the engine speed up, but the car doesn't go any faster? Or, will it just not go any faster, period? I'm not totally convinced this is a transmission problem, yet. You really shouldn't go any faster than 35 in second. At 50mph in second gear, you are really taxing the engine.
