So here is the problem: I have a 3 speed Chevy Nova (19711) with a 307 engine, which won't shift into 2nd gear. Is this a transmission or a clutch issue?

If second is the only gear you cannot get into with the engine running, then it is a transmission issue.

Would you explain further why the transmission would be bad in this situation? I was thinking that the pressure plate was so worn out that it wouldn't allow the car to shift into second.

But, I was thinking the transmission is the problem, since 2nd gear is the only problem (Reverse, 1st, and 3rd work)

If you had a problem with the clutch system in which the clutch wasn't disengaging or the pilot bearing was keeping the input shaft spinning, you wouldn't be able to get the transmission into any gear with the engine running.

If you cannot get into second gear with the engine turned off, then you have a problem in the transmission or trouble with the shifter linkage. If you can get it into second with the engine turned off, there might be a syncro problem for second gear inside the transmission.

Muncie 3 speed?
