Home rebuild of transmission

I have a 2002 Dodge B-2500 van, with 360 engine. The tranny started having problems shifting from first to second a while ago, then it suddenly dropped out of overdrive and the transmission overheat light came on. I let it cool off, then tried to limp home, but it happened again after about 60 miles and then engine stalled and would not start again. It has 135,000 miles on it and obviously needs a rebuilt. I do almost all my own repairs on my vehicles (I own 6), but never tackled a transmission. Is is possible to rebuilt a transmission in your garage with no special tools, have the factory manual, but I know transmissions can be pretty tricky. let me know what you think, thanks. PS, I tried to tow it home, I know that is a bad idea with an automatic, but it was only 20 miles and I figured it was toast anyway, but only got about 10 miles and it lurched a couple times, I stopped and the rear tires locked up, did I cause severe additional damage, or was that just part of the original damage, thanks.

Will the engine turn over with the starter? Not so sure this is a transmission fault. I suppose anything is possible, but I've never heard of an automatic locking up to where the wheels wouldn't turn. Loren SW Washington

Yes the engine turns over fine, but does not start. My guess is that something happened to the crankshaft position sensor in the transmission when it overheated??? I had it towed to a transmission shop, the tow truck had a awful time getting it on the truck, both wheels skidded all the way up, he tried to remove the drive shaft, but could not get a wrench on it. Should be interesting to see what they find, they are going to rebuild it for less than I can buy a rebuilt and install it myself, so why kill myself. I was told that trying to rebuild one yourself would be difficult because of the many special tools, so off to the shop it went!!!
