Saturday I was driving my 1998 dodge neon and all of the sudden my gear shifter went out. I had that fixed the following day so now my gears are working. However, my clutch starts my car but after that I can let off the clutch and switch gears. I don't think that's supposed to happen when the car is started. I'm thinking that my transmission linkage is off but I'm still getting used to fixing cars. If anybody has any clue or think it might be something else, I would love to know. THANK YOU!

A car can be shifted without using the clutch. Truckers have been doing that for as long as there were transmissions. Going up a gear is fairly easy. Going down a gear you have to "double clutch" which is rev the engine to the expected speed to syncronize it yourself. If this thing just shifts easily without the clutch the clutch is probably on it's last day! T
