(1997 ford taurus gl 3.0 v6) When i pull it down it feels kinda tight and the needle wont go exactly on the P R| N (D) D 2 1.. When i drive it it feels great shifts nice and the tranny is only has 23k miles on it shifts from gear to gear just perfect. When i come back into the drive and set it in park its idle goes to 2000rpm instead of 1000rpm when i put it back in reverse it goes back down but when i put it in drive or park it goes back to 2000rpm... When i turn the car off then back on its just fine

Sometimes the shift tube bushings wear out and make the shifter tube sloppy or cause it to bind. The column has to be taken down to fix that.

The engine computer watches the transmission range sensor (aka neutral safety switch) for gear positions. When you shift from park to reverse or neutral to drive or reverse, the computer anticipates the load as the transmission goes into gear and raises the idle speed. If the linkage is sloppy or binding it could cause the range sensor to be out of position for the gear selected.

They also had problems with the shift indicator cable retainer breaking and causing the indicator to be out of position.
