LOL..........you're kidding right??

To answer your question....Yes there is such thing as an honest transmission tech and I'm sure there are dishonest ones to......It's human nature, you have good people and bad people in any walk of life.....

One problem in the transmission area is.....it's expensive work as compared to other areas but that is just because a lot of the work requires the transmission to come out.......While you may not like his price, that doesn't make the work any easier to do or the tech dishonest......One thing you could do to cut the costs would be to find a place that will allow you to r&r the transmission yourself and you could save some labor there......BUT....even r&r work requires skill and the ability to properly flush a system....

Obviously you are having a transmission issue here......Why don't you just start off with posting the problem you are having and what you are being told?????

Just curious, did a tranny tech lie about something or is it more about the cost issue like Sidom mentioned?

There are some great mechanics on here that can help you figure out your transmission problem. Post all of the info you can and they might be able to help you narrow down the issue.

Ok............that really isn't much to go on.....

Looks like you're just p*ssed about something & who knows what it is...

It could be you drove & drove your car without maintaining anything and ruined your transmission and now you are looking at thousands of dollars to fix it and are p*ssed off about it.

OR

Maybe you took you car into a shop that wasn't qualified to work on it and we are dealing with a case of incompetence....while not good, this still isnt' dishonesty...

OR

Maybe you took your car into a shop and are being ripped off....that would be dishonest......

The thing is............with these little blurts like what you are posting here.....no one knows.....and personally I don't have time for...

BUT.......

If this is a case of you ruining your car by your own neglect.....You will not being using this forum as a means to trash this industry and throw a hissy fit.....

There are far more of them than there are informed, responsible and intelligent car owners who actually get the maintenance done that they are supposed to. Way more than there are drivers who understand that anything that has moving parts won't last forever and has a service life. Tons more than there are drivers who will actually admit to neglecting their car and beating on it to death instead of accusing every single mechanic who tries to tell them the truth about their situation a thief an a liar.

I'd say your odds are much better of finding a good and honest transmission mechanic than that mechanic's odds are of finding a good and reasonable customer.

Re: General question Sign In

With transmissions if something breaks, it could be considered "toast". They can normally be rebuilt, but depending on what's wrong, it's not always cost effective. I'm not a mechanic but do work on my own vehicles. I recently rebuilt the transmission in my wife's minivan due to it being toast. There were quite a few damaged parts inside. I saved some money doing it myself, but if I would've taken it to a shop to be rebuilt, it wouldn't have been worth the cost. It would've been toast and my only other options would've been either getting a used one from a junkyard or buying a brand new transmission. Just because they told you it was toast doesn't mean it can't be rebuilt if you wanted to pay for it. They may of told you it was toast meaning it's not worth the cost of rebuilding it. If he was trying to rip you off he would've said he can fix it and then throw you a bill for $3000 to $4000. It sounds to me like he was being pretty honest. If something is broke, it's broke and it's not always an easy fix.

If the transmission shop didn't offer any other explanation besides "it's toast" maybe go get a second opinion. Maybe call the shop back and have them explain what exactly caused it to fail and what your options are. Did they explain anything else? Be sure to take it to a shop that specializes in transmissions.

If it is toast it's not going to be a cheap fix no matter where you go. Transmission work isn't cheap. The only way you'll be able to fix it cheap is if you do it yourself. When you take your vehicle to a shop you're not only paying for the repair. You're paying for knowledge because it takes years to learn how to effectively diagnose and repair vehicles.

Like I mentioned before, I'm not a mechanic. I just use the forum to have the mechanics here help me out when I have issues with my vehicles. From the sounds of it the guy wasn't trying to rip you off. He was just being honest about you needing a new transmission. Nothing lasts forever.
