2001 Ford Escort SE 2.0 135,000

My car has the Service engine light on. This is th 3rd time in the past few months that this has happened. The first 2 times my friend resetted the light and the Shift Solenoid needed to be fixed. After the 2nd time, I went to Autozone to get the codes. The codes are below. My friend told me to go back to Autozone if the light reappaed. After the 3rd time I went back to Autozone and they gave me code P0761(this is the only code they gave me). The code says "Shift solenoid 3 circuit low input. Voltage at circuit 1223 is below 2-2.5 volts when the 3rd gear actuator is switched off by the ECM". I went to my friend who is a mechanic. He said the transmission has a problem. He recommended that I keep driving car until the transmission dies. And then I replace the transmission so its very expensive. I have a 2001 Ford Escort SE. I think the Shift Solenoid needs replace. Am I correct?

The PCM sends voltage to the (SS3) shift solenoid to command it on.

You need to verify the PCM is sending voltage to the solenoid when it is being commanded. Power can be checked at the transmission connector while commanding the solenoid on with an enhanced scan tool.

If there is power at the transmission connector, then you need to check the solenoid and circuit for opens, shorts to ground, or shorts to another other circuit inside the transmission. Typical resistance of the solenoid should be around 12 to 20 ohms.

If the PCM, SS3 circuit, and shift solenoid check out electrically, there could be a mechanical problem with the solenoid. You would have to air check the solenoid to confirm. If the solenoid checks out good, then you have a mechanical problem in the transmission.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
