Electrical transmission problems Sign In

I have a 1997 Chevy C2500 3/4 ton pickup. When it's cold out (I mean cold for Las Vegas, NV like around 38-50 degrees), the auto transmission will quickly "jerk" to shift into each gear. However, if you were to stop somewhere and shut it off for a minute or so, it runs fine afterwards. It will also at times suddenly down shift when on the freeway. The transmission has been rebuilt and I'm sure it's electrical. It also has a new brain. I've been told by the transmission rebuilder that he believes it is the ignition switch but isn't positive. Could that be it? If not, what could it be? Thank you.

IDK for sure but doubt ignition switch unless the engine isn't behaving or doing momentary cut outs? If so that needs more diagnosing than guessing. Pretty sure you can pull codes on this for trans even without a light on there could be info to help. Intermittent bull like this is a problem to diagnose as you know you bring it back and it won't do it in front of anyone - happens all the time.

Check for connections for throttle position, potential vacuum leaks and I think this has a vehicle speed sensor on trans itself. For some reason GM - seems like trucks more than the cars has problems with the connector/plug in things more than others.

I'm not a trans specialist but have some clue,

T

The transmission has been checked for error codes and anything that did come up previously was replaced. The vehicle currently shows no error codes, that's why it's a mystery even to the transmission mechanic.

Thanks.

A trans tech should know what the possible things are that could cause this. New sensors or not they might not be good or right. It's not exactly some rare exotic vehicle,
