Do we need a new transmission for 96 Intrepid? Sign In

We just bought a '96 Dodge Intrepid (3.3L engine) and took it in for a thermostat repair. The mechanic just called us to say that the car isn't shifting out of 2nd gear, and that we need to buy a whole new transmission. There was a bit of sediment in the transmission fluid but no chunky metal. The transmission fluid was low in the car. Neither my boyfriend nor I have ever noticed the car not shifting properly. We've driven it on highways and city streets. There has never been a problem. No grinding, whining, bad smells, high RPMs, etc.

My main question is could the car not be shifting out of 2nd and we just haven't noticed? I drive a manual, so I'm familiar with what the car sounds like going 30 mph in 2nd gear, and I've never heard that come out of the Intrepid. Both of the mechanics said they heard it clearly, and they were amazed that we hadn't noticed anything. Is it normal to not notice this with an automatic transmission? We're seriously shocked at what they're telling us. Any insight would be great.

Thank you!
Anne

I really think most people would notice if it didn't shift out of second gear. Did you request the shop/mechanic to look into this or was that on his/her own? Are they qualified to make the call that trans needs an overhaul - do they do that at that place?

I'm not a trans mechanic but for a 96 there should be a code reading taken that includes transmission faults if any. Could be fluke or coincidence that it is really bad or needs a reset for "computer" aided shifting.

This should be done by qualified and trusted transmission techs/shop IMO,

Thank you very much for your insight. We asked him to check out the car and let us know if anything besides the thermostat needed repairs. They do fix transmissions there and specialize in engines (according to them). There were no codes identifying transmission issues, which baffled us. Only the mechanics said there was a massive problem. I will definitely take it for a second opinion to a specialized transmission shop. I have a hard time believing that something as big as not shifting out of second gear would get by both of us.

Again, thank you very much!

Trans codes reading would take special code reader and if the shop did that and nothing showed it could be plain worn out.

It was a while ago and I really don't know if it applies to this vehicle and was older than this model. One Caravan/Voyager? suddenly didn't shift out of gear like yours? I called the trans shop I deal with at that time and he said unhook negative battery cable for a while and it will reset and son of a gun it did and never heard boo about that vehicle again about that??

I really DO NOT KNOW if that still applies at all so if you try that until perhaps someone else here has more info trying that is AYOR. Because of the the expense of a rebuild I do think a second option is a good idea,

If the input or output speed sensors fail, it will default to second gear. The parts are not that expensive or that hard to replace. They just screw out and back in. They are located on the front of the transaxle close to where it bolts to the engine block. They are on top of each other about 4 to 6 inches apart. They look just alike.

Excellent as usual W2O. I couldn't buy needing a whole trans from what the first post said just yet on this,

Tom
