Is there any way to get fluid into the TC after installing an empty one? Filled tranny, no fluid flow at all. Pressure flush? any ideas short of pulling the AT and pouring fluid in it? It's a '91 Alfa with a ZF tranny.

Thanks!

Stuart

Most times you just put the car in neutral/park and the trans pump will fill the t.c. itself, Or pour what fluid you can in then let it set over night cause it will seep back into the t.c.

Thanks Dave. It just won't pump, and we were careful to align the three spines too. Took off a cooler line, and no flow. Do we need to somehow pump some fluid into the line to prime the pump, or did we screw something up? Only option left is to take it to a tranny shop. FrownFrownFrownFrown

Wish I could suggest this annonymously but have you thought of tilting the car to a reasonable extreme a couple ways, or perhaps pump some ATF by hand pump in the proper direction using the cooling lines?

I'd like to hide from suggesting that but it might workCrazy

Blame it on my Kitty!

Stuart, I'm wondering why was the T.C empty anyhow? Was another T.C. being replaced? I'm sorry I'ld should have ask you this in the first place, the problem might have not been the T.C. but the trans pump instead...just a thought.

Tom, ask kitty if there is any more prozac Unsure.

im pretty much having the same problem with my C6 in my Galaxie. I forgot to put fluid in the TC. and im not getting pressure, could it be anything else besides the pump? what was the outcome of the guy who created this thread?

This now suggests 60s to early 70s?

I think it may have a drain plug you could add fluid to prime it. Really don't recall a problem with these but then again if you recall the 60s you really weren't a part of itCrazy

Original person hadn't reported the fix to this problem??

so, by not putting fluid in the TC, would that cause the pump not to pump any tranny fluid because basically the TC is just free wheeling?

Is this converter new or did you drain it? I don't understand how you find it empty? The pump should keep it filled as needed to do its thing. I don't recall any tricks when one was lowered by a drain plug except making sure level is fine when all done as you would anyway.

They hold a bit of ATF vs just what you get out when dropping a pan. How long have you let it run to see if all is working? It could take a while for it to stabilize and grab some. Just sitting there it wouldn't show much resistance as it takes some RPMs from the engine or it just slips as designed and increasingly grabs and I recall most of the era ended up about 90% RPM out vs RPM in at maximum as they didn't lock up 1 to 1.

There is a way to "bench" test them they we discussed in school back during the Nixon Adminstration so long ago!Wink

Just how is it you are at this point and wondering what's up?

Don't want to butt in but he said he took "A" line off.The fluid only pumps one way so may be the wrong line. Also if it was a new converter even by turning upside down and filling before installing usually takes a long time"i experienced that" as well as emptying one without a drain plug "we had to use air to force out the old fluid"

This thread is a year and a half old. I doubt anyone is still waiting for help.
