Dakota 3.9L will a 1997 & 2001 tran work ? Sign In

I have a 1997 dakota 3.9L 2wd AT (V6). I have a transmission issue. Besides the PO783 code, i have now developed a problem where the transmission will sometimes not come out of first gear into second hen in Drive. If i shift down into 2, get some speed up and shift back into D the transmission will then cycle back up into second gear.
This is now problem #2.

Problem #1 was PO783 related - unable to shift up into 4th gear from 3rd.

Opening it up today to see what i'm up against. Sure could use some words or wisdom as well. Fluid is not bad yet and it's been babied against overheating too much. No burn smell (yet).

Also, I have an opportunity to get a transmission from a 2001 Dakota 3.9L 2wd AT. If I did, does anyone know if this would be compatible with my '97 3.9L ? I'm thinking about the PCM, wiring connectors, etc.

P0783 3-4 Shift Sol, No RPM Drop at Lockup, this means the tranny controller is not seeing the rpm drop after it commands torque converter lock up. It could be a TCC solenoid, but most times this code is from a more serious internal tranny issue or possible issue with valve body.

First thing I would check is condition of fluid if it's burnt, contaminated or small metal filings that you can see when held to a light source I would suspect internal transmission issues.. it is possible that the torque converter its self has failed.

If your still in doubt about fluid condition drop the pan and inspect the magnet for excess metal .. tear apart filter plastic housing and open the cloth filter with a razor blade and look for any sign's of metal.

Conducted a comprehensive road test with service tech before dropping the pan. The PO783 fault has been there for a while, this was known and it is expected replacing the O/D and Lock Up solenoid should alleviate this problem solenoid.

The "new" issue 1-2 shift problem was somewhat intermittent. By that I mean it was 50/50 whether the TCM would shift it from 1st into 2nd and into 3rd. When it did not, we shifted manually into 2nd gear and then returned to Drive, where it would go into 2nd gear and then into 3rd. So knowing that much and the fact that when hitting the brake he could feel changes (my words), was confirmation to the tech that the TCC was reacting properly. I'm hoping he's correct in that assessment, anyone ?

The pan was dropped and the fluid was a bit darker than normal but it was not burnt nor did it smell much like an overheating issue. There were some filings found on the magnet and some in the tray. The tech expected some and was not alarmed by what he found. He later removed the valve body cover and at last indication, he did not notice a problem with the shift valve. That's as far as we got this evening.

Does anyone have anything further they could add...... i.e. what else to check for ????
