Code PO741 Corolla 2005 Sign In

Toyota Corolla, 2005, 1.8L, 4 cyl. Ck.eng. light came on yesterday. Got out the OBDII code checker and ran a scan. What came up was PO 741, $10 1/2 Generic. torque converter clutch circuit performance /stuck off. We know this is transmission related and fluid is normal ( at least in cold ) Haven't run it up to engine temps yet this morning but don't think that will change anything, at least not in this case. Today is Sunday and I can't find out anything else around here until tomorrow. Don't think it's anything serious but anyone have any ideas as I just don't want to clear codes yet until I find a few more answers. Thanks

It's an electrical issue with the overdrive system and it will have to be troubleshooted by a local expert.

Thanks, maybe I should just put it up on the ramps first and take a look at the electrical connections on the tranny as the roads were terrible ( aren't they all now---thanks gov't. ) that I went on yesterday. You think a transmission shop is a better source than an auto shop? I hate t take a vehicle to either one as I've done most all my work over the years. (not auto trannys though ) I hate the overcharging they give you. Thanks Hank

Definitely a tranny shop. Most general repair shops will be just as lost as you.

Re: Code PO741 Corolla 2005 Sign In

O.K. I have a good reliable one(Tustin Transmission ) where I can get a quote. I saw in this forum somplace where a guy had a 1998 Caddie with the same code and he took it to the dealer ( bad move ) and they told him it wasn't serious but I'm gonna climb under that monster first, before I take it anywhere. Nothing like a serious look-see first, especially if you have hit anything in the road. I needed to do that anyway as I have to check the routing of this serpertine belt as this thing had 68 K.on it when the wife bought it and now has 82K and a new belt is much cheaper and reliable than major engine work. Anyway thanks again . Thanks Hank

Re: Code PO741 Corolla 2005 Sign In

This may sound really funny but I had that check engine lite on for two days and I hadn't yet had the opportunityto go to a transmission shop as suggested to check it out. I went to a tire shop and had two new tires on the Corolla and when I left the tire shop, the check eng lite was out. Can you believe that but it was. the only thing I can figure is that the vibrations fron the impact wrench in putting those tires on with the vibrations traveling down those axels(front wheel drive ) must have jarred something but the light has been out since. Will keep my fingers crossed in the meantime. Thanks for the help Hank
