2001 Honda Civic EX 1.8 engine with 3 month old rebuilt 5 speed manual transmission is jumping out of 5th gear. Is it reparable? or will I have to purchase another transmission? Thanks....

Sure, it's repairable. The big question is "how much will it cost to repair"? You won't know that until you have it inspected by a trans specialist. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

The mechanic has told me that it isn't repairable.... But then he asked me how much I would take for the car. Being a unmarried woman, I am getting the impression that I am being taken advantaged of.

FYI - I will be taking it to someone else... but I was hoping to get some insight so that I am not an easy target. Thanks

Anything is repairable. It's just a question of whether it's worth the expense. I would be very leery of someone that told you something wasn't worth fixing but tried to buy it themselves, especially being a civic. There is a big market for those with teenagers. I would go get a second opinion before doing anything.

Planning on calling around tomorrow to other shops. I am trying to get as much information as I can to be as smart as I can before I call. Thanks

If the transmission was just recently rebuilt, it can't need much. Why isn't the shop that rebuilt it the first time fixing this under warranty as they should be? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Purchased the rebuilt transmission from a 2nd market dealer and a local mechanic installed it.

I don't know what a 2nd market dealer is but anybody selling a rebuilt trans should be standing behind it. If not, I hope you have learned a lesson about making a deal like that. Trying to save that extra buck can end up costing you a lot more. Deal with local people that have good reputations.

You haven't told me anything that I don't already know. FYI - I will be talking with the 2nd market dealer (who is highly recommended in the Georgia area - that is not the issue) tomorrow. I believe that no one could have predicted that the rebuilt transmission would have only lasted a few months.

That's why parts and repair have warranties and yes, the failure can be predicted if the repairs are not performed properly.
