I have a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe 3.5L. When I start driving my car as I accelerate my car jerks but only jerks that one time. Also I think my rpms are high. I had a diagnostic test today and the codes that came back were a P0183 and P0713. I talked to one transmission place over the phone and they said I needed my transmission overhauled. Is that true? Is there a simple cheap fix that I can do for a little while? I honestly know nothing about cars and I'm afraid that I'm being taken advantage of. Can someone please help? Oh and is it ok to drive like this?

You can't really diagnose a vehicle over the phone. The vehicle has to be at the shop, so the technician can run tests to see what the problem is. Saying the transmission needs an overhaul is a definite guess. They were probably telling you that because you were wasting their time trying to diagnose your problem over the phone. They don't get paid to diagnose problems over the phone. According to the code(s) you are getting you have some electrical problems that need to be checked out. Take it to a regular shop that does drive-ability first and have them run their diagnostics on it. They will tell you if you need to see a transmission specialist or not.
Whatever you do, don't clear any code(s). They might need to look at the freeze frame records.

I took it to a regular place this morning and after the diagnostic test they told me they don't do transmissions and to go to a place that does.

One code points to a fuel temperature sensor circuit and the other code points to a transmission temperature sensor circuit problem. A drive-ability tech should be able to diagnose those two code to find out what is causing those code to pop up. He/she may refer you to a transmission specialist if you have to go into the transmission to check the wiring harness or temperature sensor. They can isolate to the transmission though. I don't see why a transmission temperature circuit code would mean the transmission needs to be overhauled.

The transmission guy that I spoke to told me my transmission was slipping and overheating that's why the sensors were going off and that's why I need to have it overhauled. I hope I said that right, I'm really not knowledgable about anything car related. I will take it to a drive-ability tech though. I'm new to the area and don't have a regular car shop yet that's why I was calling around.

He/she is full of Sh!t. How can he/she say that when they haven't checked the vehicle out? That transmission temperature sensor circuit code doesn't mean the transmission overheated. It means the transmission control module has detected an electrical problem in the temperature sensor circuit.
If there is a problem electrically with the temp circuit, it could change the way the transmission computer shifts the transmission, so it is important that is checked out before condemning the transmission for overhaul.

Thank you! See this is what I was worried about, I'm an easy target. That's why I wanted to research and ask for peoples opinions. I really appreciate you helping me!
Also the place today didn't check my transmission fluid. Should I do that first? Can I do that myself?

Keep us posted on what you find out. Ask friends or coworkers where they take their vehicles for repair. Word of mouth is better than the phone book hunt in my opinion.
Look in your owner's manual. It should describe how to check the transmission fluid level.
