My daughter recently bought a 96 Blazer, 4WD manual (push button) transmission, less than 90K original miles. I believe it is a 4.3L (?). I did notice when she got it that the clutch seemed pretty loose, but we didn’t have it checked out. She says when driving on the freeway, she shifted into 4th and the engine revved real high so she stopped and we towed it home.

When turned on, the car makes a horrible, loud clanging noise. It at first sounded to me like it was getting ready to throw a rod, or maybe something worse, and I just figured the rig was toast. On closer listening underneath the car, however, it sounds more like the gawdawful noise is coming somewhere from the vicinity of the bell housing… but I can’t tell whether it’s coming from the engine side or the transmission side.

The transmission can be taken in and out of gear, although clutch feels extremely loose. Letting the clutch almost all the way out, enough to put just a little strain on the engine, seems to quiet the ugly noise just a tiny bit, but not by much. Pushing the 2WD/4WD buttons on the dash does not appear to affect the noise or anything. Even with all the clanking going on, the engine RPMs appear to remain normal and steady. There are no fluid leaks and the exhaust smells normal.

What are possible scenarios that would cause what I have described? I'm not the fix-it-myself type, so I'm just trying to determine best and worst cases for what it will take to get it repaired. ...Or is the rig toast?

It's weird, but I have worked on many second generation S-10 Blazers and have not seen one with a manual transmission. I know they are out there though.

More than likely you have a problem in the clutch assembly. Something is probably coming apart and the only way your going to find out is to remove the transmission. The average price for doing a clutch job including parts is somewhere around $800.
