99 Lumina -- what type of transmission fluid? Sign In

Hello,

I have a 1999 chevy lumina and I noticed the transmission slipping over the past few days. I checked my transmission fluid and its just about out.

The manual says to use DEXRON III, and I am really not an car expert so I wanted to make sure that I should still use this (or can I ever still buy it) since the manual is from 1999...

Also, I need more engine coolant and it says to use DEX-COOL. Should I also buy this or is there a newer alternative?

Thanks in advance...

Yes Dexron is the correct fluid for the transmission.

Dex-cool is what it came with from the factory but a lot of times some of these get switched back to the conventional green anti-freeze. You can look in the radiator & see which one you have. Dex-cool is orange in color...

If it's brown or looks like mud, you should think about getting the system flushed.

Re Dex-Cool: As Sidom said that was the original fill. Going just by product labeling, there are a few "clear" coolant/antifreeze brands out there that boldly claim they are compatible with either Dex-Cool or regular "Green" Ethylene Glycol. Keep in mind both are based on EG and the color is added. Some used to be blue! Read labels and save receipts.

Try hard not to exceed the industry standard of 50% antifreeze as should be indicated in manual and on product. Some is sold premixed which is up to you as you really are buying the water already in it vs concentrate - read labeling.
