Thanks for taking a minute to advise me. Just this week, car har started really getting a kick (not just noise, it lurches) -- but only when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Other gears seem fine. Fluid levels are good. Trans shop says no codes show on engine. They think it is probably cracked drum -- expect repair of $1500-$2000. Ouch ! Some other forum mentioned possible throttle position sensor problem .... but the trans guy said no, that would show on the engine codes ... Any advice would be greatly appreciated -- before I commit to huge expensive repair on a 15 year old car .. THANK YOU !

I think they are on the money. Is this 15 year old car worth the money to you? It would be hard to find a decent used car at that cost, and you would know what you have in it vs. a car with unknown history. Maybe get it inspected overall at a shop to see what other items are needing attention or will in the near future. That way you don't do the trans now and have other issues rear up that are expensive right after spending all that money.

Thanks for your insights. In the midst of all the anxiety, it was hard to step back and get perspective. The transmission shop had set me up for an appointment this morning. I called them to say "hold-off for now", and dropped the car at my regular mechanic for a thorough check-up. Depending on the results, will decide on the major transmission work or not. Thanks again. Sometimes making the obvious suggestion is just what someone needs to hear (who is too stressed-out to be thinking clearly). Have a great weekend !
