98 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4X4 "Trans Fluid Everywhere" Sign In

My friend has a 98 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L 4X4 miles are unknown cause he said it stop working like 4 years ago but it had around 120k when it stop working. Ok we were going fishing and about 2 mins from his house the truck starting acting like it didn't wanna go like the trans was going out (I will say the previous day and all the days before this one it drove and shift like a champ no problems at all) so we got out and check the fluid and it was empty and underneath the truck it look like someone flip the truck over and a dump truck just came and dumped a entire bed of trans fluid on it the entire underneath was cover with trans fluid, but it just wasn't underneath it was everywhere and I do mean EVERYWHERE. fluid was on the back trunk, back glass, hood, fenders, front windshield, doors, ground and it took four quarts of trans fluid to get back home when was only down the street. The trans would shift ok when fluid was in it but it will run out like it had a hole in the middle of the trans pan or something. So what could of happen??

With a mess like that it might be messy to isolate where the leak is from. Can only guess but a trans cooling line could have rusted out or rubbed a hole and is losing fluid fast. Properly filled and hoisted safely to be under it while running you should be able to locate the leak. Could be leaking from other places but I'd bet on a cooling line by the description,

thanks tom that was the problem, but I have ran into another problem. When I put the cooler trans line on and of coarse I had to put like 2 quarts of trans fluid in it once I did all that I tried to crank it now it will not crank it just clicks. Now I went and had the battery tested and it turn out to be a good battery but with a low charge so I charged the battery and it took a full charge so i went ahead and bought some new battery terminals also. I put the hot battery on there (without the new terminals) then it started right up i drove it around and once I turn it off it wouldn't start no more. I then put the new terminals on it and it still wouldn't start so my next thought was the starter i took the starter off and took it to the parts store to be checked and it passed. So the terminals are new, battery is good, and the starter is good and it still will not crank. When I turn the key to on (not start) all the lights do light up and once i turn it to start the light does go off so I know its not the ignition switch. So what else could it be? alternator??

Many battery terminal ends are really only intended as temporary or emergency use only and don't work well. Make sure those are making a good connection. Some styles are better than others or could mean easier to just replace the whole cable,

the battery terminals are good it started it up when those ends. It just all of sudden just stop cranking. Its not even turning over. It just clicks when I turn to start now If i put a hot battery on the car it will crank. but after about 2 or 3 mins it will just go back to clicking and not turning over

What do you mean "put a hot battery on it?" Is that jumping with another battery or vehicle?

How do you know a battery is good? Looking doesn't mean diddle but how do you know connections are good.

With the description of it will crank and then go to a clicking only there's a loss of amp power available to keep starter solenoid engaged. That's usually a low battery but could be cable connections also but they are more apt to cut out completely and may come back or not at random.

You can test power availability and amount with a volt meter or even a test light if everything goes out. With replacement ends on battery cables you may find a voltage drop right there between a post of battery and right to cable by-passing the cable end itself while you get the clicks.

I'm focused on the cable ends as you said you just replaced them. If cables were any good they wouldn't have needed them to begin with and there are better and worse types of cable end replacements - either if failed puts the whole cable in question.

Examples of cable ends first is just meant for an emergency when no other way is available like this type,

Another type is much better but still not as good as a good cable to begin with looks like this,

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If this is the Jeep with the trans fluid all over the place perhaps the starter was soaked as well and it is a problem now. Any of this is only as good as the weakest link,
I figured it out what the problem is. It was the NSS (Neutral Control Switch) it was going bad which was causing the truck to not crank in park. It had to be in neutral for it to crank. the damn thing cost me $240 just for the new NSS but at least it will be fixed.
What I ment by a hot battery was a fully charged battery. I knew the battery was good cause I took it to Autozone and they tested the battery and it was a GOOD battery just with a low charge and I knew it wasn't the battery terminals cause I had just bought NEW terminals that day. but I've fixed the problem like I said it was the NSS, but I really do thank you for your help thou, until next time.
