97 Chevy Cavalier z2.4 transmission issues

I have a 97 cav. It was a salvage car. I had to replace the muffler, and the transmission last year. There's been a bunch of minor repairs too.
I was planning on changing my front brakes, rotors, and wheel bearings but on my way home from picking up the parts, my car jumped out of second gear. THEN I couldnt shift into ANY of the gears unless the car was stopped, 0 rpms. It only lasted for a few moments, eventually I could shift again, but it STILL pops out of 2nd gear.
I have no idea what it is, or how much it'll cost to repair, but im going to assume this is something I can't do or check on my own. Or is it?
Is it something as simple as fluid levels, or much much bigger than that? I dont understand how Im having problems with my transmission when I just had it replaced last year.
HELP PLEASE! I need this car.
EDIT: The shifter wiggles a bit too when in 4th gear, but has never popped out.

might be a syncro issue in the tranny .. I would drain oil with a cloth over bucket to catch any filings look for any signs of metal or brass.
