Never say never but burnt fluid and having run low because of the troubles doesn't bode well for that transmission to not need a mechanical overhaul. May be too late but the more you even try to drive it the more damage to the thing will happen requiring a core to be rebuilt for you.

Do move that line that's too close to exhaust if at all practical or insulate it from the heat of exhaust which alone could be burning the fluid or getting it way too hot and they don't like that.

Your call to get a trans shop to inspect this at the risk of rendering yours not rebuildable but I tend to think it's too late. Just my take by your description of the situation,

T

Tommy! Smile. Car companies make full blown mistakes in placement of things and always did. The cooler lines should be metal even though high end rubber can replace a section but that's for clunkers.

The wearing parts include bands that grab on drums and clutching is a pack. There's also a valve body and torque converter which is why you can sit still with engine running.

Why do these folks make some bucks? Because it takes tons of education, experience and a VERY expensive place to even do this. Then the mess, the hazmats and the list goes on. The tech doesn't make $100 bucks - that would be the shop's charge to provide the place to work. Now you need a scan tool also that costs a fortune and pay to update it.

All that was just the basics and then all the info from driver and conditions are collated to decide which gear the trans should be in when and when to lock up converter for best fuel economy.

A good plumber can make $100 bucks/hr with far less overhead and other trades too.

I never specialized in automatic transmissions but trust me it was a big part of automotive training vocational school and we did overhaul a couple both automatic and standard shift ones if only to know what it's all about. That was now long ago but the basic operation hasn't changed, the controls of the operation has and no doubt will continue to.

I know this is expensive to the customer but the cost to even attempt this is insane. Transmissions are a specialty vs general other mechanical work just like auto body work is on its own too.

If vehicles only needed one gear this would be simple but it just isn't so - yet.

Don't blame the prices on the tech or the shop. It's expensive to do this and the costs keep coming whether there's work or not so be good or it will all fail.

Side note: Where I live is so regulated and expensive in general that almost every grandfathered shop that closes becomes a donut shop or fast food place as if it changes hands it must meet the new standards. If you could do this all yourself and had the place and tools you would save big bucks but I dare you to try it.

Good luck. Hope I'm wrong but there's already two strikes against this transmission and a fast ball coming!

Tom

If I could find
that kind of fair person to buy a good transmission from for $200 or $300,

I think you're living in a fairy tale world there. We pay considerably more than that for a good used transmission these days and if you expect anyone to guarantee anything, they will have to double that cost to cover the risk.

Yeah right, You keep buying on Craigslist and we'll see just how you make out.

No reputable business would ever buy parts there.

Motive? Are you nuts? We are professional techs that donate out time to help people free of charge. It's not my fault you are a conspiracy theorist.

Craigslist is the single one worst ripoff source in the country and there is no way any reputable shop would risk their business and customers by dealing with anyone on that site. If you haven't been burnt yet, then it's only a matter of time before you are. If you think we have any motive here besides helping people, then you need to move on.

ASE Reputable? lol That to me is a paradox in terms! You might be able to delete my link, but you just lost
all of my activity here. And no one has even said the word "clutch". So keep your subjects and kiss off!
As far as my problem? It is a salvage title and to scrap the van was already an option.

ANYBODY can find the info many mechanics bs about. Good day.
