I have a 96 grand am 195000 it doesn't always go into gear when I start up. When it does go into gear everything works fine no slipping or clunks I was told to replace transmission filter but this seems more like a mechanical issue does anyone no if there is a cable that could be stretched or broken and how would you replace something like that any help would be greatly appreciated

First - Do you have a good history on this car? Trans if original you are lucky IMO. If not routinely serviced (trans) all along since a rebuild doing much now will either help a lot or finish it off again IMO.

At 195,000 miles you may need to give it some time (a few minutes) to warm up and will probably shift right away. My bet is fluid is old and not flowing as well as it should. Problem with changing it now is that new fluid will naturally have strong additives in it again and may be shock to the thing.

If original and you know it, it owes you nothing now. If you try any additives do so AYOR and only one I have any respect for is Trans-X. Don't follow it's instructions as they want to sell product like the others. Just 4 oz max and if all my guesses are on target it will either help or also take it outMad

History would help us help you if you know it. It near has to have a filter as you mentioned. If clogged it's game over for that trans anyway,

T
