I don't usually post in forums but I'm in a pickle and I'm asking for YOUR help. I have a 96 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 with a 4.0 V6 EFI and a 4R55E trans with just a little over 145k miles. I bought the car this July for $1000 which I worked the previous 2 months for. A friend owned it before and gave it to me for a pretty good deal because the car is in magnificent shape for its age except for a slight full body shudder and shake at idle and at 2000 Rpm's (No hard shifts, no slipping, no whining). 2 weeks after purchasing I was on the highway slowing down to get in the left turn lane and at about 15-20 MPH there was a clunking noise and it was almost like the car shifted in to neutral. After pulling onto a side street I shut the car off and checked the trans fluid and it hadn't changed color since I bought the car. (was an amber color not the usual ruby red and it didn't smell burnt) I was actually going to get the trans flushed the next day. I then started the car and put it in drive and all it does now is creep forward 5 MPH at 4-5000 rpm's and it does the same in reverse. I decided to turn 4x4 low on and it does the same but has a little more torque. I was told its probably the torque converter that's bad and the rest of the trans is good but I need better help diagnosing. Because I am very limited on money and probably don't have 500 bucks to my name at this point. Last thing I wanna do is pay for a rebuild or a new trans. If you have any ideas or need any more info don't hesitate.
Thanks,
Ethan

At a glance this isn't so promising for that transmission. Just being able to rev this up so high and only go 5MPH is likely wearing itself out fast now.

If you can muster the funds for a professional diagnosis if only to know what it will take to fix I'd do that and expect an overhaul to be the suggestion and the fix,

T
