95 Saturn transmission

Hi, I'm hoping you can help. I'm a VW mechanic and I can tell you just about anything that ails a VW bug. But when it comes to the newer cars with computers and fuel injection I don't have a clue. My problem is a 95 Saturn SW1 transmission with around 150,00 miles. Ok, first the transmission lost reverse, but shifted thru all the forward gears just fine. So, we replaced it with what I believed to be a good transmission from a wrecked Saturn, I thought since the car was wrecked it must have been working. Well after replacing the transmission the car starts off fine, then shifts into second gear, then it goes into neutral and rev's up high and then downshifts. So, we replaced that transmission with another that was guaranteed to be good. Same problem. Exactly the same. The only way to go down the road is to leave it in 3rd instead of drive and to barely touch the accelerator. Then the car will go, but if you give it just the least bit of throttle it slips back into neutral then down shifts. All the gears bite hard when it shifts, no slipping. I can't imagine that two transmissions in a row would have the same issue. I'm thinking it's an electrical issue such as the PCM, but then again I do not know or understand these newer electronic and fuel injected cars. I have taken it to three different mechanics and no one can figure it out or has ever came across this problem. It is in a transmission shop now and he has given up. I have already put so much money into this car and I hate to junk it because everything else about the car is in too good of condition. I really hope you can help and if you need to know anything about a VW bug, the older air cooled ones, just ask and I will be glad to help. Thanks very much

If this new tranny you got was guaranteed to work I can't think of anything else it could be. I'm no pro though and my knowledge isn't all that great when it comes to trannies. A torque converter was just one of the first things that came to mind once you said you had tired more than one tranny.
Were all 3 trannies, including the original, doing the same thing? I wonder if it was the torque converter from the get go? I'd take it to a tranny shop and have them hook it up to a scanner. There are a few professional mechanics on here that will be able to give you much better advice than I can so be sure to check back in. Good luck and hope you get it figured out.

The original transmission shifted thru all the forward gears just fine, it was only missing reverse. The problem with the crazy shifting only started after the first transmission was installed. And it was the same with the second transmission. Thats why I'm thinking it is something electrical that maybe the guy who changed the transmissions may have messed up. It's really strange that two transmissions in a row acted the same way.

Have you verified good power and grounds? Give the TCM a bad ground and you'll have all kinds of craziness.
