94 jeep grand cherokee with a 5.2 ltr Sign In

i have a 94 jeep grand cherokee with a 5.2 ltr. takes a long time to shift between first and second and third. with no over drive. was told it was valve body. so I pulled it, had it pressured checked and cleaned put it back in, shifted fine for the first five minutes. Then it would downshift from third to second, was told it was third gear accumulator. pulled it back out, accumulator was shattered. went to junkyard found transmission that looked like it was rebuilt, dropped pan there was metal in pan valve body looked new. pulled valve body. one of bands u could tell had let loose (at the junkyard) so valve body must be good, right? bought that with accumulator installed it in my transmission shifted fine with no overdrive, then got stuck in second gear. So went and bought another transmission out of a wrecked 94 jeep cherokee. put it in realized kick down cable was bad so replaced that. Transmission works fine shifts normal but still no overdrive, replaced overdrive switch still no overdrive....any ideas? suggestions? please help!!!! would like to go 4x4n soon!!!!

Are you sure you got the balls back in the right location when you dropped the valve body? Did you install a new torque converter? If all 3 are doing the same thing I'd maybe look into the torque converter.

Seems like you have some mechanic skills. Have you considered rebuilding one of the trannies you got from the salvage yard and rebuilding it? I did my first one last year. I'm no professional mechanic. Just a diy guy. I purchased a rebuild manual for my tranny, and with the help of this forum, it works great. Just a thought.

If it had the same issue with 3 different trannies you would think it's not associated with the tranny. If the only symptom now is it not going into overdrive I don't see how it couldn't be a problem with the tranny. I'm far from an expert though. I lost overdrive on the tranny I rebuilt and it ended up being a stripped out 4th clutch hub. I've heard it's a common problem on my tranny but not sure if it's common on yours. I wouldn't think that all 3 would have the same problem but who knows. With my luck all three would be junk. Cool

I'm not sure if it's the same on the AW4 tranny as the 4T65E that I did but there are two different size check balls that are used in the valve body. Make sure you put the right ones back in the right spot. Also make sure you put all of them back in.

There are a few professional mechanics on this site that should be able to give you better direction than what I can. They should be around later this evening.

You really should have the TCM scanned first to see if there are any codes in it. Then you can find out if the TCM is commanding 4th gear or not.

Swapping parts gets really expensive after a while you know.

You're not accessing the TCM with that.

I doubt you even have the capability with that unless it is the $5000 professional model.

You may be able to upgrade the software but if you didn't specifically buy TCM software, it can't read anything there.
