94 Olds Ciera V-6 Tranny quits dead every 1000 miles. Drain and New filter twice. Same result! Sign In

Can you answer a question please? I have a 94 Olds Ciera. The transmission quit working - nothing, no gears or reverse. I changed the filter and drained (no flush). It drove 1000 miles or so and quit again. I repeated the process... drain, new filter, no flush. It drove and shifted fine for hundreds of miles again. Now it's the THIRD time! Do I just need a flush or is it the torque converter pump bad? Another pump? I'm lost. Thanks! (If you have time to answer).

You should have a line pressure test done on it to confirm if it has line pressure in different gear ranges that are to specifications. Could have sticking valves in the valve body or apply component problems.

Thanks for the advice. I'm considering changing the filter again (third time), and doing my own flush (no "power" flush). I wonder if there is a clog somewhere in the system that is keeping the fluid from reaching the pump. I can't understand how it can run and shift perfectly and then quit dead. Any more ideas? Thanks all!

Like I mentioned you can tell if you have an oil pump problem by doing a line pressure check. It isn't uncommon for valves to get hung in the valve body.

OK, now I get it! Thanks very much sir. The line pressure test actually tests the pump in the torque converter. I didn't comprehend what you were saying at first. I'll ask one last question, if you don't mind. How could the bad pressure (or bad pump) work fine after changing the filter and some fresh fluid, and then quit dead after 1000 miles? It seems the pump would either work... or not. You are obviously a knowledgable professional and I am grateful that you took the time to respond.

You really don't know if the pump is the problem yet. Your right though, pumps aren't something that just work fine one minute and go out the next. Testing is going to have to be done to determine where to look for the problem.

Thanks again sir. (Discretesignals). I appreciate your patience with my multiple questions. I think then that I will go ahead and do my own flush and new filter (one LAST time!) There are a couple of guys that posted "how to flush transmission" videos on Youtube. If I get the same result (a few hundred miles and out), I'll take her to the shop. Finances dictate I do it this way. If the Trans guys tell me it's cooked.......... I guess it's over. AT LEAST I have an idea what to ask them to check first (thanks to you and this web site!), that helps very much. I will let you know what happens Discretesignals. Sixstring.

Watching this Sixstring as this is unusual to me? By all rights just changing fluid + filter really shouldn't be a "go or no go"" thing. Whatever and just suggest you tear apart the next filter you take out and see what the heck is in it if anything. If that is clogged I can't see much future in this trans. If, if, if your filter can fall down or doesn't seal properly there could be a problem with that. Still not a good thing by the description of events so far,

T
