Re: 94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE Sign In

I would go with an updated pack, that gasket is different. If you get the updated pack eliminate the metal plate, the original pack takes two gaskets, the updated pack takes only one. The late gasket is different from early, to see which one you have i would need to see a picture. Gary

Re: 94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE Sign In

ok i got a solenoid pack from the wrecking yard it doesnt have the metal plate on the base so i'm going to try it out. just wondering if metal shavings or clutch debris can work it way into the shift solenoids and cause it to malfunction ?

Re: 94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE Sign In

That generally does not happen, you could clean the bottom of the pack(you will see small screens) just make sure you have the correct gasket. Gary

Re: 94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE Sign In

there are'nt any small screens on the bottom of this one and i doubt theres going to be any on the one i pull off my transmission. so if there are'nt any small screens then that means to me there could be possible that debris could have gotten in there ? ok what about gasket sealer do i put any on the new gasket ? and what about the guide pins does it matter whether they extend or not ? and what about locktite on the screw threads when i pulled the shift solenoid of the van at the junk yard they seemed like they snapped loose as if there was locktite on them ?

Re: 94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE Sign In

I would just put a new gasket, i dont use sealer. The guide pins of the solenoid pack should be the correct height( a new solenoid pack they would have to be adjusted, a used one thats was bolted to a trans should be fine) no need for lock tight, just tighten them but not crazy, i torque mine down to 100 inch pounds. Im surprised no screens, they are cone like facing up into the solenoid pack, but i really dont see debris getting into the pack. Gary

ok heres the gasket i got got it. cant really see any series of numbers on it. i tried putting it on the bottom of the shift solenoid and it didnt really want to go over the guide pins. i was afraid to force it because if a crinkle is created in the gasket it wont be as flat as normal maybe creating the slightest gap. having trouble posting a picture i click on upload photo and its asking me to sign in again when i'm all ready signed in

Re: 94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE Sign In

You may have to push alittle to put the gasket on, once its on it should be ok. Also, make sure the sutface where the gasket will sit is clean. Have you taken off the original solenid pack yet? Gary

Pics are a pest here for many and certain programs or setting you have. Try posting a pic to a photo site then link to it works for most. Phototbucket, TinyPics to name a couple of many like that,

and now i got this problem though. i tried my cruise control and it no work ? i think this somehow is tied in to the brake light switch and transmission HUH ? how could this have happened ?

Sorry, my shop is packed.........long days(and sometimes nites) That shouldnt have anything to do with the solenoid pack, do you have brake lights? have you checked the fuses?

Re: 94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE Sign In

i'm glad for you that your shop is packed. as the Wayan's bros always said "MO MONEY MO MONEY MO MONEY" anyway i dont get it before i fixed the shift solenoid i checked the speed control and it worked just not right when i set it it surged meaning when i set it speed would decelerate about 10 mph and then speed up to the set speed and keep doing that. now that i fixed the transmission now this happens. i did check the fuse and i'm not getting power to that fuse ? i cant figure what could have happened to the circuit to cause this. have you heard of this happening before ? thanks

Re: 94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE Sign In

Nomadd: We've switched problems on one thread which gets confusing perhaps too late so let's find this issue. Gary asked the obvious, "check fuses" as you've been here and there all over this van and admit IDK for sure this exact set up for the model year.

Yes, brake light switch would prevent cruise from working almost always the brake lights don't work either or stay on you'd have noticed.

Things that cause cruise to shut down include the vehicle speed below about 40 MPH for about all. If you have an on/off switch you may or may not have a light also on dash in English saying "cruise" for the model year. Some don't.

Under the hood cruise is pulling on throttle with either a cable to an actuator that's either electric or a vacuum diaphragm. Make sure that is connected at throttle and any wires in place. Now check if vacuum you'll see a vacuum hose to it is intact then check that the diaphragm doesn't leak. Some you can just pull or push and plug where hose goes in and let go and hear it held or check with a vacuum pump it's good.
Plain way it attaches to throttle may have just broken - look for it.

Just FYI cruise in about anything will default to not working or OFF intentionally such that you don't lose control of a vehicle. This is too old for shut down for rain, or wipers being on is to come or already on some to shut down cruise as well not 1994,

Re: 94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE Sign In

i did fuse is good.but no power to the fuse. so does that mean the problem lies between the battery and the fuse box ? but how does this stem from my previous problem is what puzzling me ?

Re: 94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE Sign In

Dang - Off on a tangent from the original problems. I can't say these are related just that "cruise" will default to OFF for many assorted reasons.
How are you testing fuses? For looks, power is there and passes thru one or how?

Fuse probably doesn't even get power until a series of other things allow it.

Test it for power with a light that passes thru both sides but know if you aren't travelling about 40 MPH it isn't supposed to work or shut down so then find what tells it that.

"Cruise" also remembers at what speed you were at when it was last disabled to go back to that until shut off by any of those things.

Wiring diagram needed or look where you've been already working on this for disturbed wiring.

Other: When nothing makes sense is for this vintage just "pith" the memory of this. That is to disconnect battery negative, turn on headlights or something that always has power and "pith" it. Then you connect up again and it's reset with possible other side effects from doing that so AYOR.

Other II: There's a block of wires that passes thru firewall should be right at or connected to interior fuse boxes. If all those connections are not intact still funky things will happen. Rather than pull that apart to check just take a look if it's location is good and not corroded by anything.

OK - You said it worked before so that does strongly suggest it's something disturbed while working on something else. Just don't go too nuts as it's totally possible it's just a coincidence nothing to do with what you already did? IDK - it also may have permanently defaulted to NOT working as a safety designed into it,

Tom.................UGhmmmm.............UGhmmmmmmmmmmmm...........UGhmmmmmmmmmmm. i'm clearing my throat here.can you look at my last post ? i stated that i'm not getting power to the fuse for the cruise control so i dont know why you're going into all that other stuff ? if i'm not getting power to the fuse doe'snt that mean that the fault should be between the battery and the fuse box ? or am i thinking wrong ?

Re: 94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE Sign In

The only fuse I see for that system is for the switch, through the clockspring. (2A).
That is keyed through the ignition switch.

Re: 94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE Sign In

nomad: I did read your post and asked you how you were testing. HT just said and clearly it is empowered first thru ignition or is OFF. This feature whole objective is to "default" to off if anything not in line.

Clock springs I steering wheels! OMG - add some age to those with controls thru spring loaded contacts to brass or copper contacts. Any failure there it wouldn't work.

Sorry if I missed it but is this even hooked up now - all plugs and items it took to mess with transmission stuff is everything known back in place now?

Mopars = Chrysler products which this is. Look and check that things are enabled by grounding things not the other way. For that plain checks for continuity of connections starting with what might have been disturbed then on to the many "defaults" that would shut this down on purpose by design. Can't know, that could mean it's not allowed to get ground to operate not the other way. What hurts is diagrams will show things to ground but you don't know what item/part is that ground the body, engine/transaxle or dash metal. Hair pulling goose chases sometimes,

Re: 94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE Sign In

hey T i think i'm entitled to go off on a tangent here and there my brain and body are "WACKED" EVER HEARD OF Seroquel ? can you relate to WACKED ? serious health problems. anyways yes everthing looks to be hooked back up the way it should be. but i know at my age everything is not always the way it appears. so i checked the fuse again and its keyed (key on)) i dont get it ? it must be the only fuse in the whole fuse block thats keyed. so i need to find a wiring diagram and see where these wires go to. do you know what color wires go to this fuse ? oh and thanks to the lousy doctors and lawyers pertainingg to "WACKED"

Re: 94 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN LIMP MODE Sign In

Post #47 - It's too late for WHACKED. Let it be.

Where are we with this? Check fuses with a test light AND continuity if no power. Cruise is definitely off with ignition OFF and should forget what speed it was at last also.

Have we established you have an DVOM even the $10 Wallyworld one will do. A plain test light - like a scratch awl handle lights and a pigtail with an alligator clip at the end. $5 bucks +/- one is all you need.

Just look at the throttle body for now. How or what cable or chain type something pulls on the throttle? Follow that back to what pulls it. Does that have wires only or wires and a vacuum hose? Is hose any good if that type?

Just knock some things off the list one by one and let's find where the fault lies. Mopars (Chrysler products to me) do have a habit of doing electrical things backwards for some things. They (other makes too) place important electrical stuff in totally wrong places for water, under battery so stuff gets good and corroded or kick panels low where they can get soaked.

Last for now: Forget colors for now. Look in owner's manual (get one on line if missing) and find which items fuse or combo of them and any relays are involved. I don't think these say in plain English under covers for fuse boxes so you don't know easily which is for what. Another might have a pro version of many cars you pay royally for that would say? IDK - certain vehicles like this came differently new under different nameplates down to a cargo only version that wouldn't say "Grand Caravan" so YOU looking right now will speed this up,
