I've got a '93 saturn SL2 with about 150,000 miles on it. Recently its been doing this thing where after I"ve been driving for a while, I'll press down the gas pedal and the RPM's will rev, but the car wont accelerate. It's an automatic transmission and I think what's happening is that it has a hard time going to the next gear, and will get stuck in a gear (probably 2nd or 3rd). Sometimes you can feel the car slam or jolt when it's going into the next gear (it also does this whenever I put the car in reverse). Also when this happens the "service engine soon" light comes on. is there a quick (cheap) fix to this or do i need a whole new damn transmission?
Thanks!

The very first thing you need to do is have the codes read that were stored when the check engine light came on. They will get you pointed in the right direction.
If you live near an AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts, they will read them for free except in California.

The two things that cause this problem are a loose input shaft nut or a sticking or otherwise inoperative 2nd gear control soleniod (or the wires to 2nd/ reverse control soleniod) in the valve body. Checking the input shaft nut is fairly easy, remove the end cover and the toque is 111 foot pounds (if loose you need a new nut). The hard part is finding the socket that fits the nut (23 mm 12 point) and holding the input shaft while checking the torque without the factory tool. If it is tight you need to figure out the issue with that soleniod.
