93 Saturn SL1 manual Will not go into gear Sign In

Hi there, I have a 1993 Saturn SL1 1.9L manual transmission with about 367000 miles on it. I am the second owner, and not sure if the first owner reconditioned the engine (is it even possible for an engine to get that many miles without being replaced?).

Anyway, about 2 weeks ago on a rainy day, the car became rather hard to put into 1st, the other gears were hard also, but 1st seemed the hardest. I read a bit about synchro's and someone told me that you can run fine with worn syncros, it'll just be hard to change gears. So it gradually got harder to put into gear over the last two weeks, and I noticed on hot afternoons recently it was REALLY hard to get into gear. I mean I would have to strain to push it in. The mornings seemed easier (this may have just been a mis-perception though). Today I cannot even get it into gear at all (midday hot sun), except I popped it into reverse once. However, if the engine is off, it glides into gear no problem.

Being a huge car novice, I couldn't even find the transmission fluid to check (if there is even fluid in manual transmissions). What do you think could be the problem(s) here? Is it worth fixing? It does run remarkably well for such an old car with a massive amount of miles on it.

Thanks for having this website!

Smile

This is probably not that serious. It uses a hydraulic clutch system and occasionally they will leak fluid from either the slave cylinder at the transmission or the clutch master cylinder on the firewall. Check the fluid level in the reservoir and if it's low, that is your problem. You will have to locate the source of the leak and replace the faulty part. It won't do much good to add fluid now because it already has air in the system and won't work until the air is bled out and that can be difficult.

Thanks for the advice. I will check out the reservoir. Where is it? I see the windshield cleaner, and I see the coolant, but not anything else. Bear in mind that I'm a complete noob. Is there a place to find car manuals online?

It's a small reservoir right next to the brake master cylinder and uses brake fluid just like the brakes.

Hammer Time is on the right track, but no need to try and diagnose it as the slave and master cylinders come as a complete assembly, you just have to replace everything.
