93 Ford E150 Not shifting correctly Sign In

I recently bought a 93 Ford E150 5.0 conversion van really cheap. 175k miles. I took it to a mechanic and had the fuel pump replaced as well as a cracked exhaust manifold, cats and muffler. There was also an issue of one of the back brakes self adjusting too tight and had that fixed with new adjusters. Last week I drove it from the central valley, California to Virginia City, Nevada. On the level freeway, going 70 mph the trans would continually shift back and forth from OD to 3rd. I manually shifted it to third for the rest of the trip. When climbing grades it would slow down. Giving it more gas did nothing. When it got down to around 45 mph it would shift down to second and then gain speed. On that trip the van got 9 mpg.

Today I cleared the KAM and the van seemed to have a little more power but it still does not shift right. When taking off on a slight incline, it will stay in 1st to 35 mph then shift to 2nd and immediately to 3rd.

Could it be faulty speed sensors or shift solenoids? If any of these were bad would the MIL activate? The MIL has never stayed on.

Thanks for any input you can share.

I would check for plugged exhaust. (converters)

I had both cats and the muffler replaced before the trip.

Which transmission do you have?

If it has an OD light, is it flashing?

I believe it is an AOD. There is no OD light and no OD button on the shift lever.

AOD is all mechanical and uses governor pressure to control shift timing. You could have a throttle valve cable issue or it is not adjusted correctly.

Re: 93 Ford E150 Not shifting correctly Sign In

I finally got some time to crawl underneath the van and take a look. The tran pan says Automatic Overdrive METRIC. There are 14 bolts on the pan. I noticed that there is a black connector on the tail end of the transmission (driver's side) with nothing connected to it. There is a round connector with a clip, looks like it's for a cable, and next to it is a smaller oval connector. It doesn't seem right to me that these are there with nothing connected. If this is a speedo connector, why do my speedometer and odometer (digital) still work? Is this an indication that the transmission has been swapped with a different model that requires these connections to operate correctly?

Is the governor pressure controlled by vacuum as with a modulator? How would I check the pressure?

Governor pressure is controlled by the governor on the end of the output shaft. The governor determines what speed the transmission shifts (shift timing).

Throttle valve pressure is controlled by a cable that connects to the throttle cam at the throttle body. There is no vacuum modulator on the AOD. The TV pressure is used to delay shifting, increase line pressure, and cause kick downs. If the TV pressure is too high, it will delay between shifts (engine has to be revved higher to get it to go into the next gear) and it will have harsh shifts. If the TV pressure is too low, you'll burn the transmission up and it will shift early.

I suggest you swing into a transmission shop and have it checked out.

The speed sensor on the transmission is both electrical and mechanical. Some vans or truck had cable driven speedometers that plug in where the clip is. The electrical port on the sensor is probably for vans, cars, or trucks with cruise control that don't have a rear axle sensor.

The engine computer, electronic cluster, and the cruise control system on your van get the vehicle speed information from the speed sensor on the rear end.
