93 Escort Transmission Std/ no 4th or 5th gear Sign In

I have a 93 Ford Escort with a Manual 5 speed transmission.

1st,2nd,3rd, and reverse engage and work great.

4th will not engage at all - its like hitting a brick wall.

5th will not engage at all - shifter positions freely but is not engaged.

I bought this car today (have been without transportation for months) so I do not have any history on the problems. I am not a mechanic but I have no choice but to try to diagnose and fix these problems myself. This is my only vehicle and I am starting a job in 9 days so if you can give me an idea on time frames if I have to make something inoperable to fix it - it would really help me! I have no family, friends or other means of transportation so this forum is my lifeline! Any help and insight will be soSOso appreciated.

Other problems:

No ignition switch, I have to start it with a screwdriver. What is the easiest route to fix this? buy an ignition or a column?
No door or trunk keys. (changing the locks can't be that hard!)
Methodical 'grinding or rubbing' noise when moving. (Is this a cv joint or something maybe?)
Someone has wired a direct fan toggle switch that I turn on when I use the car and there is a thermostat in the glove box. This tells me the car had overheating problems - is there something I should check to be safe and prevent more damage?

Inside driver door latch does not work.

I will have to buy any parts from a salvage yard. I am mainly concerned with keeping this car functional and hopefully gaining use of the 4th and 5th gear until I can afford something better. If I have good directions I am sure I can check/fix/replace something. Don't be too hard on me, I am a female.... but necessity is the Mother of innovation.... I can do this.

Wow honey, you really dropped one on us. Lets see what we can do here.
As you are doing the work here, which I applaud you for, I would get a good reference material specific to this car to look at. Saves a lot of trouble and time. You can get a Haynes or Chilton book but I find them quite lacking myself. Alldatadiy.com can sell you an online subscription to your car and Alldata is the reference source almost all of us techs use.

Your ignition lock cylinder is a cheap thing to get new. Used ones at the age tend to crap out like the one in your car did. You won't even need tools to put it in as I recall, simply turn to run position and wiggle it in. Turning it back will lock into place. Your shop manual will show you this.

Your door and trunk locks are held in by a small metal tab on the inside of the panel and easily changed once the panel is out of the way. If manual windows you need to get the clip release tool to pull off the window crank. Cheap couple dollar item to be had at any parts store. Salvage locks should be ok, lube up well and make sure they work freely before you put them in. Finding a car in the yard with the key for it is the challenge but doable.

Your grinding noise could be wheel bearings, it could be this car has sat for a while and you are hearing the rust on drums and rotors. Swerve left to right and see if the noise gets louder or quieter as the weight of the car shifts. Jack the car up and grab top and bottom of wheel. Try to push and pull on it. If you feel play, see if the movement is at the bearing or the ball joint.

You need to check your linkage bars and pivots for the shifter to figure out the shifting. A frozen pivot or a worn out bushing are things to be looking for. Make sure you have good lighting. I don't bother with the incandescent bulbs, get a flourescent trouble light. They won't burn you. If all is good in the shifter linkage, you may have a bad shift fork in the tranny.

The toggle switch for the fan would be because the last owner couldn't figure out how to get it working. Check fuses and relays for fan. We can talk you through anything further to get it working proper.

Good luck

I suppose I should've also asked what tools you have at your disposal. For the electrical, a 12v test light is needed and can be had for a low price. You will need a basic set of metric sockets in 1/4 and 3/8 drive with assorted extensions, a metric wrench set, screwdrivers, a few prybars and ball peen hammers. That'll get you started.

Don't go worrying about being a woman fixing a car. Us men are only here because you gave life to us. We had to get or smarts from somewhere, right? There are a lot of knowledgeable people here and we can talk you through most anything you need.

Thanks so much for the starting point! Even though I was hoping for something like " run a transmission cleaner through it first it might just fix the problem." <sigh>.
I'm really excited about the ignition.... can it really be that easy?

Before I start this process I am going to take pics, I'll set up a website so I can share this journey with all, everyone needs a little humor to marvel over occasionally Crazy

I'm making a list of tools I might need, so thanks for the help there - I'm headed over to the pawn shop shortly to see what I can find. Now off to check out the website you mentioned....

Notice the bubbly excited attitude...... enjoy --- it probably won't last long!

Alldatadiy Code Anyone?? Sign In

UPDATE: found 1 month trial for 12.95 or 1 year for 19.95...... any better ones out there?

I know this is a long shot.... does anyone know of a place to get a coupon or discount code for Alldatadiy.com? The absolute BEST thing would be if there was a link to a free trial! If I buy this today I can't afford any tools, parts, etc - if I buy tools, parts, etc I can't afford this -- oh the headache, decisions decisions (Christmas story thats eerily similar - wife sells hair to buy watch chain and husband sells watch to buy hairclips....)

Fingers crossed....... Dana

Don't know of any discounts. A Haynes manual would run you 15-20, which a year of Alldata would be better. Try looking at your local library. Some of them have shop manuals there and if they have one for your car you could check it out for free. Good idea with the pawn shop. Have gotten some good deals on tools in the past but you have to know what you're looking at to not get hosed.

Re: Alldatadiy Code Anyone?? Sign In

I'm gonna register for a year on Alldatadiy.com, I can do it on Monday. BTW - I got 5th gear to work!!!!!!!!!! maybe 4th gear will get the hint.

HaPpYdAnCe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bad news is - I'm really worried about the temperature. The gauge stays on the 'L' in normal... and thats a little too close to 'not normal' for me.

Re: Alldatadiy Code Anyone?? Sign In

Since this car has probably had a few items neglected on it in the past, you can probably fix the cooling pretty easy. I would drain out the coolant (bet its got a lot of brown crap in it), fill it back up with water and a bottle of coolant flush. Follow the directions on the bottle. I usually run the engine for 30 minutes, drain it again and refill with water. Run another 15 minutes, basically to rinse out the crap that the flush broke loose. Then drain that out, replace the thermostat and refill with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze. Since some water will be in there already, add half of the cooling system capacity in straight antifreeze first, then top off with water. Parts store could tell you how much the capacity is. They list it in quarts, and 4 quarts make up a gallon. Also, verify that your electric fan is coming on. They get hot when the fan won't come on. You had mentioned before that this had been tampered with, and a toggle switch rigged in. So definately want to find out what the last guy monkeyed with.

Re: Alldatadiy Code Anyone?? Sign In

The fan is direct wired and I turn it on when I start the car. I'm gonna have to redo do it asap because the toggle switch itself gets hot, but the fan definitely works when switched on.

Another source told me to drain the tranny fluid and put new fluid in. Since its a standard I have to jack it up just to put fluid in. I had assumed it took the grease but the computers at the parts store said it took auto trans fluid - almost 4 quarts. Is that normal?

Re: Alldatadiy Code Anyone?? Sign In

A lot of the later model stick shifts use ATF for lube, not 80-90 gear oil. If the switch is getting hot definately fix ASAP before you have a fire. I hate when people screw with things like that because they are putting too many amps through a cheap switch and small wire. Recipe for disaster. Find out where the fuses and relays are that control the fan and test them. Might be a screw in sensor thats bad which tell the fan when to cut in and out. Toggle switches are profanity in my vocabulary, and usually us mechanics have no problem with uttering profanity. But toggle switch is a bad bad bad word.

Yeah, probably no fuse either. I'll call the fire dept now.
