92 Econoline-slams into gear

1992 Ford Econoline 5.8
98,000 miles
automatic transmission with overdrive
Shifts fine from first to second but second to drive mostly during heavy acceleration or speeds over 40-45 mph kind of slams into gear. Same thing happens when you manually down shift from drive into second.
We have owned the van for 2 1/2 years and it seems to have always done that and has not gotten better or worse in this time. We don't drive it alot-about 10,000 miles in the 2 1/2 years. We have not had the transmission fluid and filter changed. We know it is time to get that done but first wanted to get an opinion if there was anything else it could be.

I doubt you would come out ahead changing the fluid. The bang shift occurs when too much clearance exists between the individual clutch discs and the pressure plate that actuates them. The trans goes to engage it and has to wait for the clearance to be taken up before engagement, hence the jerking feeling. You've been lucky to limp it this far. Time to rebuild it if the van is in good enough condition to warrant the cost.
