84 monte carlo gear issues?

Hi I have a 84 chevy monte carlo ss 305 auto trans. I can shift from park to drive to reverse with no issues but while in drive the car will not shift from 1st to any other gear. The car drives technically but its not operable im not sure wat kind of transmission it is my question is does this sound like it can be repaired or possibly wats wrong?? or does it have to be rebuilt or scrapped? All help appreciated

Pretty sure the vintage used a vacuum modulator sending actual intake manifold vacuum to trans. If broken hose or the module (just a vacuum diaphragm on trans) if that way it will hang onto lowest gear. If you have a vacuum pump (hand held thing) see if diaphragm if equipped will hold and that lines to it are intact,
