84 jeep wagoneer transmission problem

I have a 1984 jeep wagoneer 2.5l automatic transmission. i believe it is a chrysler a904 3 speed. when i get between 50-55 or a little faster it wants to downshift and if i hit the gas the motor will just rev really high and it wont up shift. i dont know whats going on? changed filter and fluid. help please!

A maybe: Check for a vacuum hose going to transmission. It may start as rubber elbow to metal back to rubber to a diaphragm at transmission. It needs to be intact if that style (vacuum modulator) or it will hang onto lower gear too long,
