'84 Toyota Pickup - Clutch not slipping but metallic squeak Sign In

Howdy,

When I put my truck into gear and slowly release the clutch, I'm getting a metallic 'pulsing' sound (like a squealing/chirping/ringing) that slowly fades over the next few seconds as the truck picks up speed. Sounds like however much the clutch is initially engaging is how loud the chirping is. Once up to speed, it's gone, until I shift into the next higher gear, and I get the same effect (but milder for each higher gear).
Sounds like dry metal on dry metal, rotating/scuffing/clanging against each other.

The clutch isn't slipping - or if it is, it's so light at this point that I can't tell.

Going to take it into the shop, but hoping I can get an online diagnosis here so as to go in w/ a clue.

Ran out of gas the other day, which caused some significant lurching, which seems like it may have triggered this issue by straining the clutch. It's a good truck but old.

Thanks much.

-Chris

Could be a warpage in the flywheel that is causing the chatter but would require complete teardown to be sure. This also could be the start of a throwout bearing going bad on you. Hard to tell you from this chair.

Any further details or descriptions I can add that'd help with the diagnosis?

Re: '84 Toyota Pickup - Clutch not slipping but metallic squeak Sign In

your description is very precise and left me with no questions as to what you see happening. Thank you for explaining the problem so accurately without unneeded details. I would ask if the noise is present when the clutch pedal is fully depressed at a stop? It so, a throwout bearing is likely a culprit. If not, most likely the clutch is about to start to go out or the flywheel is warped. If the latter, I would have the flywheel surfaced by a machine shop and while it is out replace the rear main seal to save headaches later. If the former, still do the same as this is an old enough clutch to need replacing anyhow and the cost to do it properly with a machined flywheel and a new rear main is negligible. No sense in ripping it apart just to put in a throwout bearing right? But it would be worth a few bucks to have a trained ear listen to this before ripping anything apart and spending your money. Could be something I'm missing and I'm sure other regulars on this site will chime in to correct me if I'm missing something or if they have another perspective to add to this. You're in good company here and there are many experts that see all fascets of repair on all models so an answer can be found here.
