84 Ponitac Trans Am Detent Cable Sign In

I have a 1984 Pontiac Trans Am that I am trying to replace the detent cable on. I have researched it a little and looks like there are two different cables depending on your Vin#. One for Vin#H and one for Vin#G. I am not sure on this and all the parts stores I have called have said they use the same one but online it shows different lengths for the two but that same part number at a differnet store is a different length. I dont know if it is just misinformation or what. But if anyone knows which cable I should use for a 1984 Pontiac Trans Am with the 8th vin digit G please let me know and if you know where to get the right one point me in that direction. Sorry for the long post hope I didnt confuse you as much as I am already.

Thanks,
Mike

I'm betting that there very likely was a choice of 2 cables when the car was a current model but they have long since been discontinued and now some aftermarket company has consolidated the 2 into one multi-fit.

Re: 84 Ponitac Trans Am Detent Cable Sign In

Thanks. I am not even sure it is the cable though I just know I replaced got it adjusted and it seemed to drive fairly well but not perfect acted as if it was shifting really late and didnt want to go into overdrive. Now it wont shift out of first gear at all so I dont know if the cable is bad or if the tranny is shot Im at a crossroads keep sinking money into it or just buy a good transmission and stick it in there. I have about drove myself nuts messing with the thing but I want my car back bad just not sure which way to go at this point any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Given the age of the car, it might be the best to have a trans shop diagnose it. They can do pressure checks on the ports of your trans to determine if it is worn out internally. You can pay them just for the diagnostic if you choose to decline the repairs they suggest, but they see this every day and have the tooling and know-how to pin this issue down to just an adjustment or an internal failure.
