700r4 transmission problems 1988 firebird Sign In
I have a 1988 Firebird with a 350 V8 and it has a 700r4 auto transmission.

When ever i go to drive the car and it is in 1st, I have to rev the car up to 3-4 thousand RPM @ 20MPH to get it to shift to Second... then While in Second Do the Same thing 3-4 thousand RPM @ 50 MPH to get it to shift to 3rd... It just seems that the Tranny is REALLY SLUGISH..... It has all New hoses, New Fluid, and Filter.

any help would be greatly Appreciated!

I can't remember for sure, but it may have an external vacuum modulator. If so, make sure the vacuum hose going to the modulator is connected at the intake manifold and at the modulator. Also, if equipped, when you pull the vacuum line off the modulator, if there is fluid present, the modulator needs to be replaced. If it doesn't have an external modulator, it could be a TV cable problem. Check the cable connection at the throttle linkage. I know it is adjustable, but you'll have to ask someone else how to adjust it, as that's beyond my knowledge. Good luck.

Where is this modulator found? I Looked under the tranny and i only saw 2 lines running to the radiator... The transmission is a 700r4..

Brad; If it has one, it will look very similar to a vacuum advance unit, and be near the rear of the trans.
