I have a 66 mustang coupe with 6cyl engine and a c4 auto transmission. I have a guy rebuilding it for me. I had a bent drive shaft and a major leak. He said some of bearings and seals are worn Due to the shaking.I have had to replace the Yoke as well. He also tells me I need a 3rd gear drum. He cannot find one so I am trying to find one on my own. Everywhere I look I run into a dead end because no one knows what a 3rd gear drum is. I have looked at the schematics that I can find online and cannot find anything that is called a 3rd gear drum. The closest I can find is the Foward Drum. I have confronted him with that and he says it’s the 3rd gear drum I need. Does anyone know what he is referring to? Unfortunately he is not near me or I could see exactly what he is talking about. Please post if you have any clue.

Thanks CamSly

Cam; I spent about an hour last night trying to find out the same thing.Unsure It's got to be 'terminology'. I did find some early Ford transmission parts 'stores' on the internet, but none listed 'third gear drum'. Forward/reverse/main, ect. Try 'googling' Ford transmission parts. You may want to question this guy a bit more? Is he an actual transmission shop, or just a private guy that 'works' on 'stuff'?

Re: 66 mustang transmission drum question Sign In

According to my mechanic, who doesn't know about transmissions. This guy is a transmission guy he is just doing it on the side for cash. Now I have found the schematic on line. here http://raceabilene.com/...ages/trans/c4exp.gif but i see no mention of a 3rd gear drum. Even when I look through how a transmission works on TLC the only hint I can decifer is it is the forward drum. Because all of the other parts lock together while in high gear. I am still looking if i find anything I will post.

Thanks

Just5 show him that diagram and tell him to point out what he needs.

Re: 66 mustang c4 3rd gear drum question
the top row - far right is the hgh direct drum. I call it high /reverse drum , thats what it does. 2nd gear band also is used to hold that drum --for 2nd.
