'63 nova transmission

I just rebuilt the transmission for a '63 chevy nova. After putting it back in, it won't go into reverse or drive. What should I check first?

Make check with engine off, then start and see if level drops any.. if not could have issues with pump or possible filter installed incorrectly or fell down.
