Bummer. This is going to take some diagnosing, although the solenoid that engages the 4X4 is almost always the problem. However, it could be the switch, the solenoid, or even just a bad connection. Generally, the PCM will set a trouble code which may help in diagnosing. We should start there. I've only owned one Ford with an electric 'shift on the fly' transfer case and that was a '94. All of the rest have been manual.
