4L60e Not shifting passed first

Good morning everyone. I own a 1996 Corvette with a 5.7 and a 4L60e. The car has 42k original miles and is in great condition. My only issue is the tranny. I traded for the car and I already knew there were issues with it. Anyhow, I have park/neutral, reverse, and 1st. Nothing passed that, no slipping or grinding. Both A/B solenoids has been swapped, new servo, and new pressure switch, new fluid (no alarming metal inside). I took it to GM for diagnostics, everything communicates as it should, except the tranny doesn't shift when told to by the computer. We even ran through the process, using both manual and auto. Still nothing. We also reflashed the computer, just to be certain. Any ideas????? Thanks

Yes sir. I ended up swapping it out due to a leak from the connector. I also just swapped the shifter linkage out yesterday. I'm going to make the final adjustments and try it out today.

well, if speedometer works and no codes, could have problem with band or maybe valvebody such as a stuck 1-2 shift valve. so it is being commanded to shift correct? I had one once with no shift and had a bad band(2nd gear) and 3-4 clutch(3rd gear) very surprised it's not setting a code

According to the PO. He had it "tune" and a few parts deleted (EGR valve, AIR injection system, and one O2 sensor). It ran fine until he erased an O2 trouble code. Which is why I asked GM to reflash the TCM. The original shop is over two hours away, and was very vague as to what it could be ($$$). But yes. The ECM is sending commands to the tranny. At this point, I'm not sure whether to cut my losses and go for a rebuild, or just swap out the entire valve body. A buddy of mine, wondered if it might had been a botched shift kit installation. As for codes, same here. We even pulled the trans fuse to see if it would set off any codes, and it did

Hello, Very surprised it's not setting performance codes or solenoid stuck on/off codes, do you have a scan tool with bidirectional controls to work the solenoids to see if the trans shifts

At the moment no. I would like to get one though. What do you have in mind? When we plug the computer to it at GM. He would manually trigger the solenoids, you could here it each one click. We tried also tried it while driving, and nothing. I was joust guessing the PO ragged out the car. When I dropped the pan the first time. It was very, very dirty. The second, not so bad. And well the third, clean.

ok, so if you triggered the solenoids while driving and nothing happened tells me the problem is internal, if outside the trans it should have shifted. I just did one that did not come out of first gear and it was a wire to the output speed sensor, i figured that was all checked?

When you mean checked. Do you mean a visual inspection, or test with a voltmeter or computer? Visual yes, electrical no. I figured it would be good, considering I'm getting mph on the dash. How would I go about testing the output speed sensor? Thank you

If you have a scan tool or your friend does, make sure there is a reading when the car is moving, also on the scan tool make sure MPH is working

I'm working on getting scanner. Today I drove to the store down the block. The car acted like it shifted, I dropped it back down to first (manually). And the car dipped and the rpms went up. It wasn't slipping. grinding or anything. I applied the gas as if it was a manual tranny, then I reapplied gas pedal pressure. That's when I noticed a difference in rpms. I'll try to make a video of it, hoping it might help. Update: I went out again to record it. Unfortunately, I forgot to press record. But I did get it to shift on many occasions. After awhile, I could tell when it shifted, but only to second. In order to make it shift, I would have to quickly release the throttle, quick pause, and then push the throttle again (as if I was driving a manual transmission). But if you released the throttle too soon, or too late. It won't shift. I also examined the fluid. it looks like there might be too much. Which is weird, I only added 5qts after my filter change. And that's because I had a transmission leak from the shifter linkage (which is now fixed). Thoughts?????

I should've wrote a new post rather than update an old one lol I went out again to record it. Unfortunately, I forgot to press record. But I did get it to shift on many occasions. But if you released the throttle too soon, or too late. It won't shift. And you have to let go of the gas in order to make it shift. Otherwise it will stay in first.

Not sure. When we had the computer attached, it wasn't doing it. I'm considering having the tranny rebuilt in a few months. Unless I'm able to correct the issue with the tranny in the car

This may be a long shot. Could it be possible the aftermarket wheels/tires are messing with the computer? They are bigger and have an off-set (R-18",F-17"), compared to the stock 17's

Monday, Aug 1, I'm going to hook up a computer to the car. Just to be sure. I'm checking to see if the dash speedometer is the same as the output from the trans? I'm kind of foggy on what exactly to do. Thanks

You could drive the car and after the shift pull selector down to manual 2nd and see what you have

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to run another diagnostic on it. Instead, after reviewing the service manual, various videos, and articles. I'm suspecting it to be the valve body. So,I instead proceeded to drop the pan and allow plenty of time for it to drain. I started going over the solenoids, seeing if any were loose (yes, I should've done it earlier). And I found one. I'm not jumping for joy (yet), and I could be wrong. But I don't think this solenoid is supposed to wiggle so much. But I'm going to continue on and see if I can find anything out. I ended up replacing the shifter cable, to no avail. Then after digging and digging. I decided to drop the valve body and separated everything. While matching it to the SM Diagrams, I laid it out carefully. I noticed I'm missing two springs, and a valve, plus the manual valve doesn't even match the diagrams. Now I'm beginning to think it was the valve body this whole time! Could the valve body still work even with the wrong valve installed? Or is it possible that the valves don't have to match the diagrams on the SM's? The valve missing is the "3-2 control", and I haven't found which springs I'm missing yet. Thoughts??? Hello There is a 3-2 downshift valve and solenoid, does your picture show a solenoid? Is the valve located in an upper corner of the valvebody?

Yes it does have a solenoid, and yes it's located by a corner. Turns out it's an updated 3-2 piston (I'm guessing). The diagram in the 1996 SM shows a 95 tranny, but the '96+ has a different valve (again, I'm guessing). When I was removing the valves, the bores are very reflective, and some of the valves were sticking. Even with compressed air, I was having trouble removing them. I finally figured out how to upload photos too lol
