44re drum into a 42re

In the near future I'll be rebuilding my trans. Have always heard about swapping 44re internals into the 42re. Did a good bit of homework and see in the front and rear clutches there are the following differences besides the obvious number of frictions and steels. A.The front clutch drums are a different part number but bushings are the same,seals are the same. The differences that I could find in the front drum parts are ...There are two different springs listed,the 42re spring,which is the same as the 44re 4wd spring. And a different spring used for a 2WD 44RE. Which one would I use in swapping drums? Also, are the two drums dimensionally the same? How is the greater number of frictions/steels in the 44re suited to the drum if all else is the same? Is it the spring? B.The rear clutch drum has two differences that I could find...the rear clutch piston spring has different part numbers between the two trans. I assume this directly relates to the number of frictions being different. Would I use the 44re spring? Also, in this case the frictions carry a different part number which I assume relate to being thinner to fit in the same space. Is this correct? The intermediate gear train is identical except for the front planetary which carries a different part number. I have no idea what the difference is. Neither the 42re nor the 44re front planetary exist in a new state so I don't know if its an important point. I have not delved into the OD yet. I happened into a brand new 44re 4WD valve body. Off hand can this be used in the 42re? Thanks for reading this long post!

Hello, Question, when you refer to the rear clutch drum, are talking about the one with the input shaft? Gary

Yes. Mopar uses front drum in lieu of the direct drum terminology,I think.

Hello, Ok basically the 42 and 44re drums are the same. The direct drum there is either early or late, the difference is either 2 bushings(early) or 1 bushing (late). The rear drum or input drum from like 1990 and up are basically the same, there may be some drums that take 3 clutches and some that take 4 clutches in the pack. The reart drum(input) uses a belville return spring on all drums

I concur. But should I use the spring that is recommended or listed for whatever drum I use whether for a 6 or V8? Do you know any differences between a 42re valve body and a 44re valve body?

Possible difference could be either a wide or narrow slot for the lock up. Yes use recommended spring. Gary

Thanks for all your time Gary. The only hang up I see is that in the FSM it states in bold print that the 42re drum is not interchangeable with the 44re drum. I wish I could find out why they say this.
