I have a 2006 Jeep Liberty 2wd, 6cyl automatic, 54,500 miles. It won't get out of park. This happened a few months ago too. Back in May it was stuck in park and I was finally able to get it unstuck by jiggling the transmission shifter and tapping on the top of the shifter. But that doesn't seem to be doing the trick. Is there any correlation between the shifter getting stuck and damp weather? I would appreciate any info or help.. I don't know much of anything about cars. I'm new to this site. Thanks, mb21.

Welcome to the site.

First thing to check is that brake lights work. Vehicle's are made to not come out of park unless brake pedal is depressed and if the lights don't light that alone could be the problem with switch or adjustment if applicable to that one. If they do work and won't shift we need to find out more about how that's done in this vehicle,

Hi Tom,
I checked the brake lights and they are working just fine. Someone said it may possibly be the brake switch. Shouldn't I be able to take the car out of gear with the car not running? Thanks for your help.

Shoot! No for shifting with engine not running. It still needs key in close to "run" position AND sensing pressure on brake pedal.

I don't know each vehicle's way but an electrical pulse from brake light is used in most to move a solonoid and rod (locking thingy) the prohibits shifting out of park. Some vehicles have an override for this - check manual but I doubt Jeep does.

I'm sorry but I'm at a loss exept that you'll need to find if power makes it to that switch that MOVES the lock for the shifter. Perhaps someone here knows right where to look for that. It almost certainly starts with the switch on the brake pedal and wires to shifter area - column or floor would be different,
